About Aluminum Nitride

Aluminum Nitride (AlN) was discovered more than a century ago, but it has only become a viable engineering material in the past decade due to the emergence of new manufacturing processes.  Aluminum Nitride is particularly attractive for replacing toxic Beryllium Oxide (BeO) in the semiconductor industry.   In addition to reduced toxicity, Aluminum Nitride has high thermal conductivity and a coefficient of thermal expansion that closely matches that of Silicon wafer material, making it even more attractive for electronics applications. It comes in many colors, but is typically tan.

Aluminum Nitride Applications

  • Chiplets
  • Collets
  • Heat shields
  • Laser heat management components
  • Molten metal fixtures
  • Packages for microwave devices
  • Substrates for electronic packages
  • Wafer grinding to precision thickness
