Ceramic materials were developed to address applications that more traditional structural metals were incapable of meeting.  Their chemical formulations and manufacturing processes can be tailored to yield a wide variety of useful properties, but ceramics are most notable for their high temperature capability, hardness, and electrical properties.   Though more brittle than structural metals, ceramics continue to grow in importance in all engineering disciplines.
