About Fused Quartz

Fused quartz is similar in many respects to fused silica, except it is made by melting, purifying and fusing together naturally occurring quartz (sand) to form a vitreous material. Generally speaking, fused quartz and fused silica have similar properties except for the optical properties. The optical properties can be tailored in different spectral regions by either removing impurities or adding dopants. Black fused quartz, for example, is doped to reduce optical transmission to make it useful as a backgound absorber in spectroscopy applications.
