About Fused Silica

Fused Silica is a high purity synthetic amorphous Silicon Dioxide. This noncrystalline glass is colorless, and can be made with very low impurities which make its optical transmission characteristics excellent.  It is resistant to scratching and has a very low thermal expansion and high softening point so it is extremely thermal shock resistant. The material is also chemically inert up to moderate temperatures (except to hydrofluoric acid). UV Grade synthetic fused silica has a very low metallic impurity level making it transparent down to 160nm. This material can be lapped and polished to sub-wavelength tolerances.
