There are several viable infrared transmitting glass, crystalline and other materials, depending on the wavelength range of interest. Germanium Oxide and Chalcogenide Glasses are two prominent examples of infrared transmitting glasses. Germanium Oxide is transmissive in the visible and near infrared region (300nm to 5.0um). Chalcogenide glass, which is any glass containing a substantial percentage of one or more of sulfur, selenium or tellurium (the elements in the Chalcogenide element group), is transmissive in the far infrared range (4.0um to 14.0um).
