About Nitinol

Nitinol is the name used for the nickel titanium alloy class of shape memory alloys (SMAs). These materials have a relatively low yield strength in the martensite phase, and therefore can be easily bent and shaped into desirable configurations. However, heating Nitinol induces a transformation to the austenite phase, causing it to revert to is originally shape. Nitinol will generate considerable force if it encounters resistance when trying revert to its original form, making this material useful for force and displacement actuation devices. Heat can be applied by running electrical current through the device and taking advantage of its natural electrical resistance to increase temperature.

Nitinol Applications

  • Actuators
  • Debulkers
  • Dental Drills
  • Ground wires
  • Guide wires
  • Needles
  • Slotted tubes
  • Threaded delivery wires
  • Valves
