About Pyrolytic Boron Nitride Ceramics

Pyrolytic Boron Nitride is fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to layer material onto graphite molds.  The Pyrolytic Boron Nitride is subsequently separated from the molds using a number of standard techniques.  This results in an anisotropic ceramic that exhibits high electrical resistance and good thermal conductivity.  Some of its material properties can vary by a factor of 20 depending on orientation.  For example, the highly anisotropic nature of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride’s thermal conductivity means it can conduct heat in one direction while insulating in the other. Pyrolytic Boron Nitride also has one of the highest dielectric strengths.  Although it is a low mechanical strength material, Pyrolytic Boron Nitride has the unusual characteristic of increased mechanical strength at elevated temperatures.
