About Pyrolytic Graphite Ceramics

Pyrolytic Graphite can be fabricated by a few processes, but the purest material comes from chemical vapor deposition (CVD) over molds, just as is done with Pyrolytic Boron Nitride. Pyrolytic Graphite has anisotropic material properties and has the highest in-plane thermal conductivity of any ceramic (approaching copper) while maintaining low thermal conductivity through the thickness. It is also an electrically conductive material. Although Pyrolytic Graphite is a low mechanical strength material, its strength is higher than native Graphite, and can be used at extremely high temperatures.

Pyrolytic Graphite Applications

  • Piston heads
  • Rocket nozzles
  • Thermal management devices and coatings
