About Rhenium

Rhenium falls into the general class of refractory metals which includes niobium, tantalum, molybdenum and tungsten. Owing to its close-packed hexagonal structure, Rhenium's ultimate tensile strength is much higher than other refractory metals at low temperatures but oxidizes at temperatures exceeding ~600°C. This material ranks among the most expensive metals.

Rhenium Applications

  • Thermocouples
  • X-ray tubes and targets
  • Electrical contacts
  • Aerospace and nuclear applications
  • Alloying with tungsten and molybdenum
